Lagos Task Force Arrests Six Fraudsters for Android Phone Scam

The Lagos State Task Force has arrested and charged six suspected scammers over swindling victims in a “lucky number” scheme, where an imaginary Android phone was promised as a prize. The suspects 43-year-old Amaike Nelson, Kenneth Opuana (56), Oguntade Olusegun (63), Ogologo Obi (29), Goodluck Abel (28), and Oluwafunmilayo Adebimpe (19) were arrested on the strength of credible reports.

One of their victims, 19-year-old student Rukayat Kamilu, reported that she was approached by Oguntade Olusegun who falsely pretended to need help in selecting a lucky number. Having played along, she had her phone snatched from her and the gang made off, demanding ₦100,000 subsequently for its release. The Task Force acted quickly, arresting the suspects who were found with several packs of empty Android phones which they were reported to use in scamming individuals.

Task Force Chairman CSP Adetayo Akerele added that the operation is in line with the mandate of the agency to clear the area of criminal activities that threat the safety and economic well-being of residents. The fraudsters were cautioned not to go further, as Lagos would be a no-go area for criminals. The suspects were arraigned in court and pleaded guilty to a five-count charge of gambling, extortion, stealing, and conspiracy.
