A chieftaincy celebration in Idimu, Alimosho area of Lagos State, ended in tragedy after four people were electrocuted when a canopy touched a live wire during the party on Anjorin Street.
The motor boy died instantly, while three guests remain hospitalized.
According to eyewitness Femi Ajiboye, the incident happened on November 11 during a weeklong coronation anniversary celebration, Linda Ikeji Blog reports.
A resident who had just received a chieftaincy title threw a street party to mark the occasion.
As the festivities were underway, a truck delivering sand tried to pass through but was blocked by one of the canopies set up across the road.
Some guests and the truck driver decided to lift the canopy to let the vehicle through. As they moved the structure aside, its metal frame made contact with an exposed live wire on the ground.
All four men were electrocuted immediately.
“People didn’t understand what was happening until they saw them fall to the ground. That was when it became clear that it was an electrocution,” Ajiboye said.
The party erupted into chaos as shocked guests rushed to help. The victims were quickly rushed to the hospital, but the motor boy was pronounced dead on arrival.
Another resident, Olajide, said, “Four of them were taken to the hospital, but the motor boy didn’t make it. The three other guests are still receiving treatment.”
The deceased’s family later collected his body for burial.
One resident, who asked not to be named, expressed disbelief. “I saw him buying diesel at the filling station just thirty minutes earlier. I was shocked when they said he had died.”
The incident has left the community in shock and mourning.
