In a shocking wake-up call for Lekki residents, the Lagos State Government has sounded the alarm about a serious issue threatening the area’s water supply.
Many boreholes, a common source of water for households, could be pumping out what officials bluntly call “shit water”—water contaminated with untreated sewage.
Mahmood Adegbite, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, didn’t hold back during a recent community meeting.
“Everyone digging boreholes within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water,’” he warned.
The problem? Poor sewage systems are allowing untreated wastewater to seep into the underground water sources that feed these boreholes, putting countless families at risk of serious health issues.
Adegbite stressed that Lekki urgently needs a proper wastewater treatment system to prevent potential disease outbreaks in this upscale neighborhood.
He also touched on the broader challenges Lagos faces, like flooding worsened by unpredictable weather.
This August’s unusually heavy rains, he noted, are a reminder of the city’s ongoing struggle with climate-related problems.
While Adegbite reassured residents that the government is working on upgrading drainage and wastewater systems, he admitted progress has been slow, leaving many frustrated.
The news triggered a flood of reactions online, with Lekki locals and others sharing their concerns, sarcasm, and even dark humor.
One X user, @cisl_d, issued a dire warning: “Last warning!!!! Stop investing in Lagos.
I am not a prophet of doom… something very devastating will happen in Lagos within the next 7 years… stay away for now.”
Another, @iam_damayor, took a jab, saying, “The same Lagos that somebody built and discovered!”
Meanwhile, @musajidda tried to lighten the mood, joking, “Ahaa maybe that is why suckaway no dey ever full for Lekki.”
