A federal lawmaker has made an emotional appeal for clemency following the conviction of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu on terrorism charges.
Obi Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in Abia State, spoke directly to Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja moments after the judge found Kanu guilty on seven counts of terrorism.
“My lord, I plead for mercy, I plead for clemency, and I appeal for peace and stability not just in the South East, but in Nigeria,” Aguocha told the court. “Nigeria is bleeding, and we must find common solutions to our common problems.”
The House of Representatives member, who has been a regular attendee at Kanu’s court proceedings, said his presence reflected his duty as the IPOB leader’s representative in the National Assembly.
He stressed that the nation needed a path toward peace amid ongoing tensions in the South East region.
“I plead for the lord to show mercy and temper justice with mercy,” Aguocha added, describing himself as “a friend of the court.”
