Lewandowski Strikes Late as Barcelona Edge Real Sociedad to Go Top of La Liga

Barcelona

Robert Lewandowski’s second-half header sealed a comeback win for Barcelona as they edged Real Sociedad 2-1 to climb to the top of La Liga.

Sociedad stunned the hosts in the 31st minute when Alvaro Odriozola slid in to convert Ander Barrenetxea’s cross on the counter-attack. But Barcelona responded just before the break, with Jules Kounde powering in a header from Marcus Rashford’s corner.

The tide turned in the 58th minute, seconds after manager Hansi Flick introduced Ballon d’Or nominee Lamine Yamal onto the field. The 18-year-old made his presence felt instantly, beating his marker and floating in a precise cross that Lewandowski headed home unmarked.

Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, thrilled again with his pace and cleverness, making countless saves for goalkeeper Alex Remiro before being substituted at the end, with Flick having a close eye on Wednesday’s Champions League encounter with Paris Saint-Germain.

Sociedad nearly stole an equaliser after Takefusa Kubo struck the crossbar after pinching the ball off Kounde, but Barcelona were not to be denied. Lewandowski himself struck close once more in stoppage time, clipping the bottom of the bar, but the miss was for naught as champions Barca registered their sixth win from seven matches.

The victory leaves Barca one point clear of Real Madrid, who lost 5-2 at Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
