A Nigerian man is celebrating online after mobile payment platform OPay reversed money he sent to a woman who blocked him immediately after receiving transport fare.
The man, who goes by @Olamilekan on X (formerly Twitter), shared his relief after getting his funds back, though he didn’t disclose the exact amount.
He wrote:
“Almighty Allah will bless this OPay for me. Werey collect transport money, block me. E sweet my belle 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.”
The post quickly gained traction, with many users applauding OPay’s quick response while others chimed in with their own stories of being duped.
Transport fare scams have become common enough to attract official attention.
The Rivers State Police Command recently clarified that collecting transport money with no intention of showing up is a criminal offense, specifically, obtaining money under false pretenses.
This followed a court case where a woman named Jennifer was ordered to pay ₦450,000 in damages to a man named Emmanuel after collecting ₦50,000 for transport from Asaba to Abuja but never making the trip.
Jennifer argued the amount wasn’t enough, but the court ruled her actions were deceptive and exploitative.
