Ex-Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has spoken about the negative effect of Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup on the career of players of his generation.
In a chat with Brila FM, the formery intercontinental defender expressed that not qualifying for the global fiesta was a big disappointment and setback to the team, which had just begun gathering momentum after they last participated in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
I feel bad because the same thing happened in our time,” said Yobo. “We were young, a good generation, and not going to the 2006 World Cup hurt our careers. That continuity after 2002 would have seen many of us transfer to bigger clubs. Not going to that World Cup was a big setback.
Yobo’s comment comes on the back of the current Super Eagles side facing mounting pressure in their bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, with the team currently third in Group C of the African qualifying campaign.
