A Nigerian man has sparked furious debate on the internet after declaring his intention to petition for the show of popular reality TV show, Big Brother Naija, to be banned permanently, calling it “Haram” a term used in Islam to describe something that is forbidden.
Identifying himself as @Arewa_Source on X (previously Twitter), the man did not approve of the show at all, stating, “Big Brother Naija is Haram, and I will submit a petition to ban it in Nigeria.”
His reaction followed days after the launch of the 10th season of the show, which welcomed 29 housemates 15 women and 14 men into the Big Brother house.
The post quickly went viral and ignited heated arguments across all social media platforms. Some users aligned with his stance, citing religious and moral grounds, while others defended the show as entertainment and an exercise of creative freedom.
The scandal once more brings to the forefront the clash between cultural values, religious beliefs, and modern entertainment in Nigeria’s plural society.
