Nigeria’s Passport Revolution: From Weeks of Waiting to 24-Hour Processing

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo

Finally, some good news for Nigerian travelers! After years of frustrating delays and endless queues, the country has completely transformed its passport system – and the results are impressive.

According to TVC, Nigeria can now churn out 5,000 passports every single day, a massive leap from the old system that could barely manage 300.

Even better? Your approved passport can now be ready within 24 hours instead of the weeks or months many Nigerians have endured.

Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made the announcement during an inspection of the brand-new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the Nigeria Immigration Service headquarters in Abuja.

You could practically hear the collective sigh of relief from millions of Nigerians who’ve been burned by the old system.

“The era of backlogs and manual personalisation is over,” Tunji-Ojo declared.

“Nigerians can now expect faster, more reliable service as we strengthen the integrity of our travel documents.”

The new system puts the country alongside heavyweights like the United States, United Kingdom, France, and India when it comes to secure, advanced passport technology.

That means better security features, smoother international recognition, and an end to those embarrassing moments when Nigerian passports raised eyebrows at foreign immigration counters.

The Minister was quick to praise the team that made it happen, giving shout-outs to Permanent Secretary Dr. Magdalene Ajani and Immigration Comptroller-General Mrs. Kemi Nandap.

Credit where credit’s due – this kind of transformation doesn’t happen without strong leadership.

Here’s the really clever part: this entire upgrade didn’t cost the government a single naira upfront.

The project was delivered through a partnership with IRIS Smart Technologies Ltd., proving that sometimes the best solutions come from thinking outside the box.

“This project underscores our resolve to build enduring institutions rather than systems dependent on individuals,” Tunji-Ojo explained. Translation? This isn’t just a quick fix – it’s a sustainable solution built to last.

Let’s put this achievement in perspective. The old passport machines could handle maybe 250-300 booklets on a good day. The new system?

We’re talking 4,500 to 5,000 passports daily. That’s not an improvement – that’s a complete revolution.

The Minister called it “a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s 62-year immigration history,” and for once, that’s not political hyperbole. This genuinely changes everything for Nigerian travelers.
