The Nigerian Medical Association, in collaboration with the Diatom Impact Foundation founded by Dr. Akindele Akintoye, has donated sanitary towels to all female inmates across Nigeria’s custodial centres to promote menstrual hygiene and improve the health of women.
At the official presentation, which took place at the NCoS national headquarters, Abuja, the President of the NMA, Dr. Bala M. Audu, who was ably represented by the First Vice President, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, was received by the Controller General of the NCoS, Mr. Sylvester Nwakuze.
The NMA said this was informed by a report of the Senate Investigative Panel on Nigerian Correctional Centres, which noted that poor menstrual hygiene among female inmates was one of the most contentious issues. Through advocacy and goodwill, the NMA collaborated with Dr. Akintoye’s foundation to fill this gap as part of ways to promote the health and dignity of women in custody.
Dr. Akintoye, on his part, said his commitment to philanthropy is borne out of passion for humanity and a desire to improve lives, pledging his commitment to such humanitarian interventions now and in the future.
In his remarks, the Controller General of the NCoS, Mr. Nwakuze, commended the NMA and Diatom Foundation for their support and assured the service would be open for future collaborations in a bid to better the lives of inmates and improve the correctional system.
