The Northern Stakeholders Consultative Initiative (NSCI) has called on northern political leaders to support the ambassadorial nomination of former INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The appeal follows reported comments by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who expressed reservations over Yakubu’s inclusion among the 35 ambassadorial nominees recently sent to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement signed by its Convener, Yerima Shettima, the NSCI suaid Yakubu’s nomination represents a positive step for the North, describing him as a dedicated public servant with valuable experience in national assignments. The group argued that such appointments strengthen regional representation and enhance the North’s role in national development.
Shettima added that President Tinubu’s decision to appoint qualified northerners reflects a commitment to inclusivity and merit. He urged stakeholders to prioritise unity and constructive engagement, noting that the region must focus on efforts that advance its socio-economic progress.
“The time has come for us to focus on initiatives that foster development and strengthen our position within the country,” the statement said.
Reaffirming its support for Yakubu, the NSCI cautioned northern political leaders against actions that could undermine opportunities for improved representation in federal service. The group also thanked President Tinubu for appointing qualified northerners to key positions and encouraged continued collaboration to promote peace and development across the region.
