Opposition Reacts Cautiously to Trump’s Threat, CPC Tag on Nigeria

Nigeria

Since U.S. President Donald Trump re-designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) due to alleged attacks against Christians, reactions from opposition figures have reflected a mix of restraint, nationalism, and calls for internal reform.

While they have been silent on the matter, both former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar have remained active on other political and social issues. Obi’s recent activities included attending the funeral of highlife legend Dr. Mike Ejeagha and celebrating Cardinal Arinze’s 93rd birthday, while Atiku commented on student detention in Niger State and paid a condolence visit to former Bauchi governor Adamu Mu’azu.

The leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, cautioned against the politicization of Trump’s statement, which he warned may deepen the country’s division. He said that insecurity affects all tribes and people in Nigeria and implored the United States to provide intelligence and technological support instead of “divisive statements”.

Activist Omoyele Sowore also criticized Trump’s threat as “perilous,” invoking for Nigerians the trail of chaos typical of U.S. military interventions abroad. “Whether you are Christian, Muslim, or non-religious, no one should celebrate such rhetoric,” he said.

In the same vein, the Federal Government, while reaffirming its commitment toward the security of all citizens and combating terrorism with homegrown security measures, has assured the international community of Nigeria’s capacity to manage her internal challenges.
