The Osun State House of Assembly has strongly condemned the Nigeria Police Force for shutting down the Osogbo headquarters of the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun Corps, and described the action as unjustified and unconstitutional.

Addressing newsmen in Osogbo on Friday, the Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Wale Egbedun, said the police did not have any constitutional authority to shut down the agency, which was set up and funded by the Osun State government in line with law.

Egbedun warned that the police and other security agencies involved would be held responsible should any security breach occurred in the state as a result of the action.

In line with Section 128 and 129 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the House has mandated its Committee on Security to investigate this development and report back within seven days,” the Speaker stated.

He reasserted that the Amotekun Corps was created under the Osun State Security Network Agency and Amotekun Corps Law 2020 a law enacted by the Assembly to supplement the efforts of traditional security agencies in combating kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes across the state.

“The recent sealing of the offices of the Amotekun Corps is unjustified and a clear deviation from legal and standard procedure,” Egbedun added.

He emphasized that since its inception, Amotekun has been very helpful in securing Osun’s border and rural areas, in addition to reducing security threats within the state by a significant proportion.

The Assembly, he said, will keep supporting the lawfulness and operational sacredness of the Amotekun Corps as part of the state’s security architecture.
