IGP Egbetokun: Misinformation Damaging Public Trust in Police

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has raised concerns over what he described as a surge in misinformation targeted at undermining the image and work of the Nigeria Police Force. According to the IGP, false information often spread through social media has become a powerful tool used to mislead the public and paint the police in a negative light. He noted that old videos are frequently recirculated as if they are new, images are doctored to appear authentic, and entire narratives are sometimes fabricated to provoke outrage. Egbetokun said the Nigeria Police has become the biggest casualty of this trend, as such manipulations distort public understanding and fuel unnecessary distrust. He emphasised the need for Nigerians to verify information before sharing, stressing that misinformation not only harms the police but also threatens national security and social stability.

Police Arrest Three Suspected “Sai Malam” Cult Members in Targeted Sokoto Operation

The Sokoto State Police Command arrested three suspected members of a known cult group called ‘Sai Malam’ as a result of a targeted operation carried out by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Command on Friday. Arrests come as there is growing public concern about the growing influence of the cult group within the state. In a statement, Police’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, confirmed that the main suspect, Usman Shu’aibu, along with two other suspects, “have since provided detailed confessions about the activities of the group.” In the preliminary findings, the group suspected to be behind the spread of the harmful content is believed to have recruited unsuspecting members through a private WhatsApp platform known as Red Chamber to persuade members to engage in criminal and immoral activities. Police report that what is suspected to be involved in the activities of the cult is “witchcraft and ritual practices, the quest for demonic powers, practices of homosexuality, and organized thuggery and violence.” The Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Musa, responded to these concerns by assuring the citizens that the command is prioritizing the disruption of the group’s activities. “Indeed, we have learned of the concerns of the people of Sokoto. And through these arrests, we have broken up a strong cell of this perilous sect, and we remain committed to the protection of all inhabitants,” he added. The Command appealed to parents and guardians to be keen on their children’s activities on their smartphone and social media platforms, and to report to security agencies any suspicious behavior. It was, however, added by police authorities that other members of the group are being hunted, and their cooperation is required through credible information from the public.

FRSC Mourns Slain Officer as Police Recover Dismembered Remains, Launch Manhunt for Suspects

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, has commended the Nigeria Police Force for the prompt and coordinated investigation that resulted in the recoveries of dismembered human remains suspected to be those of a missing female officer, SRC OO Lasisi (PIN C-06239). The remains were recovered by the Osun State Police Command from a river near Iwoye-Ijesa on Monday, November 17, 2025. The police, in a statement signed by FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, formally notified the Osun State Sector Commander early on Tuesday, after which the commander met with the state’s Commissioner of Police for a detailed briefing. Police investigations revealed that through extended surveillance, intelligence gathering, and tracking of phones, a herbalist in Iloko-Ijesa who had earlier fled the scene was arrested. In interrogation, the suspect claimed the officer was deceived, murdered, and dismembered by a man identified as “Victor” and other accomplices who are still on the run and then disposed of her remains. Victor was said to be in a romantic relationship with the officer and had allegedly attempted to mislead the investigators by abandoning his car along the Gbongan–Ibadan expressway to give the impression of a kidnapping. The herbalist further said Victor took the missing child from his residence, though the child’s whereabouts remain unknown. The recovered body parts were deposited at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital mortuary, while the police have asked for an autopsy and DNA analysis to confirm identity. The Corps has also reached out to the deceased officer’s husband, who is resident in the United States of America, to facilitate the forensic process. He described the incident as heartbreaking, and extended condolences to the family, praying for the safe recovery of the child. He further acknowledged the police’s effort and assured the public that collaboration was ongoing to ensure justice. FRSC and the Nigeria Police Force called on members of the public with useful information to reach the Osun State Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit or FRSC Osun Sector Command.

Police Arrest Former Presidential Aide Alwan Hassan After Allegations Against Senate Leadership

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested and detained Alwan Hassan, a former presidential aide and convener of the Grassroots Initiative Concept, days after he accused senior Senate officials of blocking the confirmation of Abdullahi Garba Ramat as the chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. Hassan, an APC chieftain from Kano State, had responded to a police invitation and was taken into custody at the FCID in Abuja on Friday. Sources quoted by News Point Nigeria stated that he arrived at the FCID in the afternoon but still remained detained as of the time this report was filed. No details on the petition or allegations for which he was taken into custody have been released, and none of his close associates or the police provided official information about the circumstances of his detention. Hassan’s arrest came a few days after he openly accused the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, of deliberately blocking Ramat’s confirmation, even though the nominee was cleared by the Senate Committee on Power. He had claimed that the delay was rooted in personal and political motives. He also claimed there was a demand from Senate officials for a $10 million bribe to confirm the nominees presented by NERC, an accusation that sparked outrage. But the Senate quickly described his allegations as “baseless, malicious, and defamatory,” arguing that the screening and confirmation of commissioners for the NERC were transparent. The lawmakers went further to threaten litigation, accusing Hassan of trying to mislead the public and bring the National Assembly into disrepute. The police had yet to make an official statement as of the time of filing this report, and it remains unclear whether Hassan’s arrest is directly connected to his recent allegations.

Police rescue 15 young women from sex trafficking ring disguised as social media job in Ondo

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have rescued 15 women, aged between 20 and 26, from a sex trafficking and exploitation network operating under the guise of job recruitment and social media content creation in Akure. The police said this on Saturday, disclosing that a sting operation by its Special Weapons and Tactics Unit resulted in the rescue of the victims and the arrest of one Jayeola Joshua and two others linked to the syndicate. Ayanlade quoted the suspects as saying that they promised the victims lucrative jobs as domestic workers, ushers, and overseas workers, among others, to lure them from different parts of the country to Akure. Thereafter, they confined the women in an apartment in Alagbaka, where they were forced into producing and selling sexually explicit content disguised as “relationship videos” for social media. According to the police, the victims were forced to send nude photos and videos to clients, while the main suspect got the biggest share of the money earned. The apartment used for the illegal activity was reportedly rented solely for trafficking. The victims were taken to the Police Hospital in Akure, where they received medical attention, counseling, and psychological therapy after their rescue. The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, while ordering the case transferred to the Command’s Gender Desk for further investigation, directed that all the suspects be prosecuted. He also ordered the arrest of the property owners linked to the apartment used for the illicit business. Lawal assured that the Command was committed to breaking trafficking networks in the state and called on parents to ensure that they verified any offer of employment before allowing their children to travel. He then appealed to the people to remain vigilant and give information that would help to reduce human trafficking and other crimes.

Police Deny Re-Arrest of Omoyele Sowore, Say He Was Taken to Prison to Perfect Bail Conditions

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has debunked media claims that #FreeNnamdiKanuNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, was re-arrested on fresh charges on Friday afternoon after his bail. In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, described the claims as false and “procedurally incorrect,” stating categorically that Sowore was not re-arrested but taken to prison as instructed by the court to perfect the bail terms. He explained that “no one arrested on a fresh charge can be taken to prison straight without a remand warrant from a competent court,” stressing that Sowore’s transfer to prison was strictly in compliance with the court’s instruction. “He was taken to prison as instructed on the attached remand warrant until such a time when he meets his bail terms nothing more,” Hundeyin stated. Sowore was arrested on Thursday afternoon at the Federal High Court in Abuja after a meeting with the IPOB leader, who features on the list of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He was detained at the FCT Police Command until Friday morning before he was moved to Kuje Prison. Police Deny Using Live Ammunition on #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protesters in Abuja

Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dispelled claims that its men fired live bullets at protesters who defied the ban on the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest demonstration in Abuja on Monday. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that officers employed the use of tear gas, and not live bullets, to disperse the masses. “I can state unequivocally that no live ammunition was deployed today. It is easy for individuals who are not familiar with the noises to get confused between the launching of tear gas and live bullets,” Hundeyin explained. He added that the police acted to protect strategic national infrastructure in the Three Arms Zone where the Presidential Villa, National Assembly, and other strategic institutions are located in line with a pending court order capping protests in such areas. Hundeyin explained that the operation was carried out with restraint and within the bounds of the law. Also featured on the programme was Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) National Chairman, Dan Nwanyanwu, who supported the protest as a justifiable move. “It is a valid demand, and I am in support of the protest. There are many Nigerians supporting it. To the best of my knowledge, Nnamdi Kanu did nothing that will justify his being placed in detention for five years,” Nwanyanwu said.
