Police Deny Re-Arrest of Omoyele Sowore, Say He Was Taken to Prison to Perfect Bail Conditions

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has debunked media claims that #FreeNnamdiKanuNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, was re-arrested on fresh charges on Friday afternoon after his bail.

In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, described the claims as false and “procedurally incorrect,” stating categorically that Sowore was not re-arrested but taken to prison as instructed by the court to perfect the bail terms.

He explained that “no one arrested on a fresh charge can be taken to prison straight without a remand warrant from a competent court,” stressing that Sowore’s transfer to prison was strictly in compliance with the court’s instruction.

“He was taken to prison as instructed on the attached remand warrant until such a time when he meets his bail terms nothing more,” Hundeyin stated.

Sowore was arrested on Thursday afternoon at the Federal High Court in Abuja after a meeting with the IPOB leader, who features on the list of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He was detained at the FCT Police Command until Friday morning before he was moved to Kuje Prison.

Police claim Sowore’s arrest was in accordance with a purported violation of an orderly court order prohibiting protests around the Three-Arm Zone in Abuja.
