Newly appointed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Tanimu Turaki has made an urgent appeal to former U.S. President Donald Trump and other international leaders, warning that Nigeria’s democracy is under serious threat.
Speaking on Tuesday amid escalating political tensions, Turaki said the deepening crisis within his party mirrors broader challenges facing Nigeria’s democratic institutions and called for immediate global intervention.
Turaki’s appeal followed a dramatic scene at the PDP national headquarters in Abuja, where police officers took control of the Wadata Plaza secretariat.
The incident intensified the ongoing power struggle between the faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and supporters of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
The PDP chairman warned that Nigeria now faces multiple crises, not just insecurity and religious tensions, but a fundamental threat to its democratic system.
“I want to call on President Trump. What is at stake is not just genocide against Nigerian Christians, you should come and save democracy in Nigeria.
Democracy is under threat,” Turaki said. “I’m calling on all other developed nations, all advanced democracies, come and save Nigeria.”
Turaki accused Wike of allegedly deploying armed thugs, with support from some police officers, to disrupt operations at the party headquarters.
He described these actions as deliberate attempts to intimidate party members and undermine the PDP’s internal democratic processes.
“We are willing to lay down our lives to protect our office, to protect our democracy, and to protect our mandate,” Turaki told journalists after the confrontation.
The PDP chairman stressed that the current political climate requires urgent attention from global partners.
He called on the international community to closely monitor developments in Nigeria and intervene where necessary to protect democratic values.
The appeal comes as the PDP remains deeply divided, with both factions claiming legitimacy and holding parallel leadership meetings.
The crisis has raised concerns about the party’s stability and its ability to function as an effective opposition ahead of future elections.
