Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Illiya Damagum, on Tuesday formally handed over leadership of the party to the newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC) headed by Tanimu Turaki.
The transition, which took place at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, comes just days before the expiration of the outgoing NWC’s tenure on December 8. It also unfolds against the backdrop of an ongoing legal tussle involving the faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. Some former NWC members were present at the handover ceremony.
Damagum said the Turaki-led committee now carries the responsibility of stabilising and repositioning the party. He added that the experience of outgoing members would serve as a valuable guide to the new leadership.
Acknowledging the challenges facing the PDP, Damagum said, “The beauty of it is that we were able to surmount all the obstacles that we faced, and we will continue to surmount them.” He expressed confidence in the party’s future, insisting that the PDP remains the dominant force to beat.
“That’s why they lose sleep about PDP. They keep putting hurdles in our way, but God will see us through,” he said, adding that those fueling crises within the party may enjoy temporary advantage but will ultimately face the consequences of their actions.
In his remarks, Turaki praised the outgoing NWC for their service and assured members that he is committed to working tirelessly for the progress and unity of the party.
