Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has dismissed reports claiming he granted an interview in which he criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Some media outlets had reported that Obi accused the ADC of faltering due to unresolved issues surrounding zoning and rotation of key political positions. The alleged remarks were said to have come from a YouTube interview published by a platform named Advocacy for Good Governance.
In a statement issued on Friday by his spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, Obi described the reports as false, malicious, and the handiwork of political mischief-makers.
“The Peter Obi Media Office (POMO) once again feels compelled to refute false and malicious claims circulating about an interview purportedly granted by Mr Peter Obi,” the statement read. “We categorically disclaim any news suggesting that he granted such an interview or made remarks against the Action Democratic Congress (ADC).”
Umar added that Obi holds the ADC under the leadership of former Senate President David Mark in high regard and has demonstrated openness to cooperation with any group committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
He clarified that Obi’s recent public engagements have focused on unity, tackling economic hardship, and building a broad coalition to fight hunger and bad governance not attacking fellow opposition parties.
“We urge the public, particularly the leadership of the ADC, to dismiss these publications as fake news spread by political hirelings determined to distort facts and distract the opposition from the urgent task of ending bad governance,” the statement concluded.
