Peter Obi showed up early to vote in Saturday’s Anambra governorship election, joining thousands of residents deciding who will lead the state for the next four years.
The former governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate cast his ballot at Polling Unit 019, Umudim Akasi, Agulu Ward 8, in Anaocha Local Government Area.
Security personnel were visible across polling stations to maintain order as voting got underway.
After voting, Obi spoke to journalists and urged everyone, particularly Anambra residents, to stay peaceful and patient throughout the process.
He called on INEC to ensure the election is conducted fairly and transparently, emphasizing that democracy only works when people’s votes actually count.
“Elections are the foundation of good governance,” Obi said, appealing to political leaders to prioritize the people’s interests over personal ambitions.
INEC’s final list shows 16 candidates competing for the governor’s seat, making this one of the most competitive elections in recent years. The main contenders include:
Prof. Chukwuma Soludo (APGA) – the incumbent governor seeking re-election
George Nnadubem Moghalu (Labour Party) – Obi’s party candidate
Nicholas Ukachukwu (APC) – representing the ruling federal party
