A devastating tragedy in Abuja has shocked Nigerians after a pregnant woman lost her twin baby girls during childbirth, following hours of walking in the sun to raise money for hospital fees.
The woman was in active labor when a passerby found her trekking under the scorching heat.
When offered a taxi ride, she refused and instead asked for the cab fare, explaining she needed every naira to pay for her delivery at the hospital.
She told her rescuer that the hospital required ₦28,000 plus a referral letter from her primary health clinic before they would admit her.
Without both requirements, she couldn’t get the medical care she desperately needed.
The kind stranger decided to help her get the referral letter and accompanied her to the health center. There, medical staff confirmed she was already in active labor.
Through tears, she revealed she hadn’t been able to buy any baby supplies and that her husband couldn’t be there because he was also sick.
Her Good Samaritan helped purchase basic baby items before she was finally admitted to the maternity ward. Despite the medical team’s efforts, both twin daughters died.
The story, which spread rapidly through social media, has sparked anger across Nigeria.
Many are calling attention to the country’s struggling healthcare system, expensive maternity care, and the lack of health insurance that leaves families unable to afford life-saving medical treatment.
