The Nigerian Senate has moved decisively against the country’s worsening abduction crisis, passing a resolution to classify kidnapping as terrorism and recommending the death penalty for convicted offenders.
According to report, during Wednesday’s plenary session, senators voted unanimously to push for an amendment to the Terrorism Act that would impose capital punishment on anyone found guilty of kidnapping.
Lawmakers said the harsher measures are essential to combat the escalating wave of abductions and dismantle the criminal networks driving insecurity across Nigeria.
“The death penalty must be enforced upon conviction for kidnapping,” the Senate declared in its resolution.
