South-South Leader Edwin Clark Passes Away at 97

Nigeria has lost one of its foremost statesmen, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, who passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025, at the age of 97. His family confirmed the news in a statement, expressing gratitude for the public’s prayers and support during this time.

Born in Kiagbodo, Delta State, Clark dedicated his life to public service and advocacy. He received his early education in Effurun, Okrika, and Afugbene before attending the Government Teacher Training College, now Delta State University, Abraka.

After a brief career as a schoolteacher, he traveled abroad to earn a law degree. Clark played a key role in Nigeria’s political landscape, serving in various capacities. He worked closely with military governor Samuel Ogbemudia and head of state General Yakubu Gowon between 1966 and 1975.

In 1966, he was appointed to an advisory committee for the Mid-Western Region’s military governor, David Ejoor, before becoming Federal Commissioner for Information in 1975. Beyond government service, Clark was a tireless advocate for the rights of the Niger Delta region, serving as the chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

His influence in Nigerian politics and his commitment to the development of his people made him a revered leader. Details of his funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
