Team Lagos Clinches Victory at 9th National Youth Games in Asaba

 Team Lagos has once again demonstrated superiority in grassroots sports, emerging overall champions at the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State. The team from Lagos headed the medals table with a staggering 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze medals, symbolizing the highlight of an eventful week of young athletic excellence.

Delta Shines as Host

Host state Delta impressed the home fans with dynamic performances in different events and finished in second position with 37 gold, 38 silver, and 39 bronze medals. They went head to head with Lagos in athletics, swimming, and gymnastics, keeping the host state firmly in the spotlight.

Edo Holds Its Ground

Edo State came in third, bagging 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze medals. Their show of strength in combat sports and races on the tracks placed them on the podium, cementing their status as one of the sporting states in the nation.

Broad Participation

As a group, 33 states featured on the medals table, claiming a combined total of 802 medals made up of 246 gold, 236 silver, and 320 bronze. In addition to showcasing Nigeria’s fiercest rivalry among its sporting titans, the Games provided an opportunity for new talents from smaller states to break through, with many of them hosting emerging starlets.

A Platform for the Future

The officials termed the 9th edition as the toughest and most colourful in the history of the Games. Apart from the medals, the tournament was a breeding ground for Nigeria’s next generation of players who are destined to be continental and world challengers in the near future.
