Tiwa Savage Challenges Afrobeats ‘Big 3’ Tag, Calls for Tems’ Inclusion Among Industry Heavyweights

Tiwa Savage

The argument about Afrobeats’ global conquest is typically a roundelay of compliments for the so-called “Big 3” Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid who represent Nigeria’s strongest musical exports. But Nigerian artiste Tiwa Savage is pushing back against that narrative, arguing that it leaves out women whose work has been just as groundbreaking.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, Tiwa raised eyebrows as she insisted that Tems should be counted among Afrobeats’ superstars.

Look at this. There are some types of artistes who make more money, so they will spend more on influencers and radio airplay, so their songs get more seen. But I don’t think it is correct to discuss the Top 3 and exclude someone like Tems. Are you kidding me?” she asked.

Tems’ Rise and Global Breakthrough

Tems burst into the limelight in 2020 after she collaborated with Wizkid on Essence, a record-breaking song that became an international anthem. Success spilled over to the international scene, gaining her collaborations with Drake and Future, as well as a Grammy Award in 2023 for her feature on Wait For U.

She also bagged yet another Grammy in 2025 in the Best African Performance award, and this placed her squarely on a pedestal as one of the finest African female artistes of her generation.

Women in Afrobeats: Breaking the Ceiling

Tiwa’s comment also shines light on the bigger battle for women in Afrobeats. As much as male artistes like to dominate airwave and stage headlines, women like Yemi Alade, Ayra Starr, and Tems have established strong niches and risen to global fame in spite of structural disadvantage.

Industry observers note that visibility and investment disparities generally mean women artistes must do double the work to gain half the recognition of the men. However, their global outreach through sold-out shows, number one albums, or Grammy awards speaks more than volumes to their importance in Afrobeats’ future.

Redefining the Narrative

By pushing against the “Big 3” label, Tiwa Savage isn’t merely defending Tems she’s battling for a wider conversation that honors the full set of talent driving Afrobeats around the world.

“The game is evolving, and so should the way we celebrate our stars,” remarked a music critic. “If Afrobeats is all about global recognition and impact, then female artistes like Tems more than fit to be named in the same breath as the self-proclaimed Big 3.”.
