A fatal road accident in Ebonyi State claimed the life of a female prospective member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. The tragedy occurred in Amenu, a community in Okposi, as a 14-seater bus carrying 12 prospective corps members collided with a parked truck.
The group was en route to the NYSC orientation camp in Afikpo for their three-week induction program as part of the 2024 Batch C Stream II. The ill-fated bus, operated by Enugu North Mass Transit, reportedly lost control and rammed into the stationary truck.
The deceased, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, succumbed to her injuries, while other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries. Local residents rushed to the scene to rescue the injured, transporting them to David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) in Uburu for treatment.
Speaking on the incident, a source confirmed, “Corps members had an accident while going to the NYSC camp.
The accident happened at Amenu community in Okposi. A female corps member died.”
Igwe Henry, the Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), verified the crash but noted that details remained incomplete as the victims had been evacuated before officials arrived.
“At the time our men from Amasiri Unit Command got to the scene, the victims had already been rescued,” he explained.
“The crash occurred on January 22 at about 2 p.m. on the Amasiri-Okigwe route at Amenu village in Okposi.
Two vehicles were involved—a grey Toyota commercial bus and a Mercedes-Benz tipper truck.”
Preliminary investigations suggest excessive speed on the part of the bus driver may have caused the crash.
Personal belongings recovered at the scene are reportedly in the custody of a local resident, Chief Amos of Amenu village. Henry further noted that FRSC officials who visited the hospital found the injured in stable condition.
