In a heartbreaking incident in Edo State, a 25-year-old man named Prosper Ezekiel lost his life during what police believe was a cult initiation ceremony.
The tragedy has left a community in shock and a family grieving, as authorities take swift action to bring those responsible to justice.
On Saturday, August 2, 2025, Prosper, along with two others—Cosmos Ado, 32, and Redeem Afeabor—all from the Afeokpella Community in Okpella, ventured into Warrake forest in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.
They were reportedly there for a secret initiation into the Black Axe cult group.
But what was meant to be a ritual turned deadly when Prosper suddenly collapsed.
Despite being rushed to a hospital in Jattu, doctors could not save him, and he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Edo State Police Command acted quickly, arresting Cosmos Ado after receiving a tip about the incident.
When officers visited the forest where the ritual took place, they found four spent cartridges, now key evidence in the investigation.
The police are still searching for the other individuals involved.
Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika is taking the case seriously, ordering a thorough investigation to uncover the full details of what happened.
He’s made it clear that the police have no tolerance for cultism or the violence it brings. “Anyone found responsible will face the consequences,” he warned.
Beyond the investigation, CP Agbonika is calling on families, community leaders, and religious groups to help guide young people away from dangerous paths like cultism.
“We need to work together to protect our youth from these harmful groups,” he urged.
