Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has addressed criticism surrounding his portrayal of Odogwu Obiora in Omoni Oboli’s hit film Love In Every Word.
Some viewers, particularly male audiences, accused Arukwe’s character of depicting Igbo men as “simps” due to his extravagant spending on his partner, Chioma. While many, especially women, praised the film for showcasing how men should express love and care, detractors argued that it exaggerated men’s financial responsibilities in relationships.
One critic on X, @Himp2million, stated: “Anambra men are not simps. Your movie is liked only by ladies who have always had the illusion of an odogwu that’ll spend his last dime on them.”
In response, Arukwe defended his character’s actions, asserting that generosity toward a partner reflects responsibility rather than weakness. He wrote: “Taking care of your woman and spending money on her doesn’t make you a simp. It only makes you a responsible man… How else do you show love to your partner if you can’t take care of their needs from the abundance of your wealth?”
This is not the first time Arukwe has faced public scrutiny. In 2023, he was criticized for allegedly exaggerating his Igbo accent in Funke Akindele’s A Tribe Called Judah. Despite the backlash, Arukwe remains focused on his craft, continuing to showcase his versatility in Nollywood.
