Social media activist Verydarkman is not backing down from the controversy surrounding his comments about celebrity chef Hilda Baci’s record-breaking Jollof rice cooking event. And he has some things to say about people questioning his motives.
Let’s rewind a bit. Hilda Baci recently made Nigeria incredibly proud by pulling off what might be the biggest cooking event the country has ever seen.
She earned official recognition from Guinness World Records for preparing the largest pot of Nigerian Jollof rice – a feat that had Nigerians celebrating nationwide.
But not everyone was completely caught up in the excitement. Enter Verydarkman, who had some… interesting takes on the whole situation.
Rather than joining the celebration train, Verydarkman offered a different perspective that got people’s attention for all the wrong reasons.
He connected the event to what he sees as a pattern of politicians using rice to distract people after making mistakes – a pretty cynical view of what many saw as a purely positive achievement.
He also made some eyebrow-raising comments about it being a “female thing,” suggesting men were just there to clap and show support.
When critics started suggesting he was just jealous of Hilda’s success and influence, Verydarkman wasn’t having any of it. His response?
Definitely what you’d expect from someone who’s never been shy about defending himself.
“Nobody has the decency to call it a distraction. Hilda Baci has made Nigeria proud by putting us on the map,” he acknowledged.
“And then one person dey talk say Verydarkman is jealous, that he cannot pull that crowd. What crowd? I can fill a stadium if I want to. I will fill it. I will have thousands of ratels who will come there.”
Translation? Don’t question his ability to draw crowds because he’s confident he could pack a stadium if he wanted to prove a point.
As expected, Verydarkman’s comments have split social media right down the middle.
His supporters are defending his right to express his views, even if they’re unpopular.
They argue he’s just being real about the bigger picture and not getting swept up in celebrity worship.
On the flip side, critics think his timing and approach were completely off. Why rain on someone’s parade when they’ve achieved something genuinely impressive for the country?
Some see his comments as unnecessarily negative and poorly thought out.
