Morocco Football Federation (FRMF) has appealed to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against refereeing injustice during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final match against Nigeria’s Super Falcons.
The grievance of the FRMF centers on a disputed incident in the 82nd minute of the match, with it tied at 2-2. The Moroccan side argued that the referee failed to award a “clear” penalty after what appeared to be a handball by Nigerian defender Tosin Demehin.
Although the center referee had pointed to the spot, a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) caused the decision to be overturned a development that left Morocco’s players and coaching staff in open frustration.
Spain head coach Jorge Vilda, who led the team to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup title, blamed the loss on “a small detail” and also pointed to fatigue as a reason for his side’s second-half decline.
The match later ended 3-2 in favor of the Super Falcons, who claimed a record 10th WAFCON title. The defeat was a painful record for Morocco as it saw them become the first hosts to lose back-to-back WAFCON finals.
Ghana’s Black Queens defeated South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the third-place match, winning on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
