Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has generated fiery controversy on social media following a post where he drew similarities between Igbo ancestral spirits and guardian angels, urging Igbos to embrace their native spirituality, Omenala or Omenaani.
While going viral, the trending post referenced revered Igbo spirits such as Mmuo Ojukwu, Ogwugwu, Udo, and Akpu and contrasted them with Christian ones such as Angel Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael.
Muna nna mu, muna nwanna. Our ancestors are our guardian angels. Our spirits in Igbo land Mmuo Ojukwu, Ogwugwu, Udo, Akpu are our own Angel Gabriel, Michael, Raphael. Awaken them by performing Omenaani and see them fight your wars. Anyone who is plotting your downfall will fall,” he wrote.
The statement has since attracted both positive and negative reactions from platforms. While some commended the actor for inspiring cultural pride and a reconnection with African heritage, others lambasted him for touting idol worship and reducing the doctrines of Christianity.
It is not the first time that Edochie has put out divisive views on religion and tradition, but the latest observation has taken the discourse on the role of indigenous spirituality in the modern Nigerian society back full circle.
