Young protesters in Nepal have stormed the country’s parliament building in Kathmandu and set it on fire, marking a dramatic escalation in days of increasingly violent demonstrations.
The chaos began when hundreds of demonstrators broke through security barriers and reached the main parliament complex.
Ekram Giri, who speaks for the Parliament Secretariat, confirmed that protesters had “breached the parliament area and torched the main building.”
The trouble began Monday when Nepal’s government banned 26 popular social media and messaging apps. Young people, calling themselves “Gen Z protesters,” took to the streets in anger.
While the government lifted the ban today after the violence intensified, the protests haven’t stopped.
For these young demonstrators, the fight has grown beyond just getting their apps back.
They’re demanding real action against corruption that has plagued Nepal for years and want better job opportunities in a country where many struggle economically.
The protests have turned deadly, with at least 19 people killed and over 200 injured since they began.
The violence has also rattled Nepal’s government – several ministers have reportedly resigned as the situation spiraled out of control.
