Enugu Fuel Stations Shun PENGASSAN Strike, Maintain Stable Prices

In a move that contradicted the strike order issued by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), filling stations in Enugu began operation on Monday without increasing pump prices. LEADERSHIP survey reported that fuel supply remained consistent in the city and transport fares were not increased. Marketers denounced the strike order as sabotage against the economy and unjustified attack on Dangote Refinery. A station owner who did not want to be quoted said: “I don’t know why all these attacks on Dangote Refinery. He invested billions of dollars, and now Nigerians are benefiting as fuel is now selling for less than ₦1,000 in Enugu. The government should call such unionists to order instead of allowing them to frustrate private investors.” Similarly, citizens complained against the unions, stating that their activities were not in the interest of the public. Mr. Ndukwe Igbokwe, a resident of Achara Layout, said: “The unions don’t have our interest at heart. Government refineries have been moribund for years, yet they never called the government to order. Now that a private refinery is working, they want to frustrate it.” Investigations had indeed determined that fuel supply in the state is regular, with no hint of shortage or rise in fares.

FG Makes NERD Submission Mandatory for NYSC Mobilisation

The Federal Government has instructed that graduates are no longer mobilized to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) unless they upload their final-year projects, and other academic work, to the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD). Reform was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, subjecting NYSC mobilisation to the NERD policy officially. Referring to Sections 2(4)(4) and 16(1)(C) of the NYSC Act, the president directed that no foreign or local graduate should be mobilised or exempted from NYSC unless evidence of deposit of their research works in the repository is provided. The directive, signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume, became effective from October 6. The students are mandated by the policy to deposit theses, dissertations, and final-year projects into the NERD database. The project is intended to avert certificate forgery, retention of intellectual property, and quality assurance in higher education. NERD official Haula Galadima clarified that submissions should contain the student’s name, supervisor, co-supervisor, Head of Department, and sponsoring institution, for accountability in the supervisory academic role to be made effective. She also added that the online platform will encourage lecturers to do better, as their names will be appearing on the works of students across the globe. “Few lecturers would want their names appearing on poorly done-up projects. NERD is thereby set to encourage quality supervision and re-enforce academic integrity in the country,” Galadima added.

Lewandowski Strikes Late as Barcelona Edge Real Sociedad to Go Top of La Liga

Robert Lewandowski’s second-half header sealed a comeback win for Barcelona as they edged Real Sociedad 2-1 to climb to the top of La Liga. Sociedad stunned the hosts in the 31st minute when Alvaro Odriozola slid in to convert Ander Barrenetxea’s cross on the counter-attack. But Barcelona responded just before the break, with Jules Kounde powering in a header from Marcus Rashford’s corner. The tide turned in the 58th minute, seconds after manager Hansi Flick introduced Ballon d’Or nominee Lamine Yamal onto the field. The 18-year-old made his presence felt instantly, beating his marker and floating in a precise cross that Lewandowski headed home unmarked. Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, thrilled again with his pace and cleverness, making countless saves for goalkeeper Alex Remiro before being substituted at the end, with Flick having a close eye on Wednesday’s Champions League encounter with Paris Saint-Germain. Sociedad nearly stole an equaliser after Takefusa Kubo struck the crossbar after pinching the ball off Kounde, but Barcelona were not to be denied. Lewandowski himself struck close once more in stoppage time, clipping the bottom of the bar, but the miss was for naught as champions Barca registered their sixth win from seven matches. The victory leaves Barca one point clear of Real Madrid, who lost 5-2 at Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
