Nigerian comedian, actor, and producer AY Makun has once again proven his cinematic prowess with his latest film, The Waiter, which has grossed an impressive ₦302 million at the Nigerian box office as of January 16, 2025. The film’s remarkable success cements AY’s reputation as one of Nollywood’s top entertainers.
Released on December 20, 2024, The Waiter captured audiences immediately, raking in over ₦200 million within its first two weeks and reaching ₦218.6 million by early January. Now in its fourth week, the film has maintained its momentum, adding ₦26.6 million despite stiff competition.
The film joins the ranks of other Nollywood blockbusters, such as Toyin Abraham’s Alakada: Bad and Boujee, which debuted on the same day, and the record-breaking Everybody Loves Jenifa, which has grossed over ₦1.6 billion. The Waiter follows the story of Akpos, played by AY Makun, a struggling man who takes on a short-term job as a waiter at the luxurious Crystal Hotel.
His life takes an unexpected turn during a grand event hosted by the Minister of Poverty Alleviation, where a bold plan to uplift the less fortunate is unveiled. The movie’s mix of humor, action, and emotional moments has resonated deeply with audiences.
AY Makun’s journey from being a personal assistant to comedy legend Alibaba Akporobome to becoming a powerhouse in stand-up comedy, acting, and film production is nothing short of inspiring.
