AI Expert Urges Firms to Strengthen Corporate Governance for Responsible AI Adoption

An Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert, Olajide Olugbade, has called on public and private institutions to have strong corporate governance frameworks consistent with regulatory requirements as they embrace AI within their organizations. Olugbade, formerly a governance, risk, and compliance consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Nigeria, made the call while delivering the keynote address at the 49th annual conference of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), which was held recently in Lagos. Presenting on the subject “Reimagining Governance: Navigating the Artificial Intelligence Revolution for Excellence,” Olugbade highlighted that AI governance must be understood as a necessary aspect of corporate governance and not a passing phase. “AI governance is no buzzword or fad; it is a fundamental aspect of technology governance that must be embedded within the governance systems of corporations if organisations are to manage the dislocations that AI is causing across sectors,” he said. “It has also become indispensable for addressing the ethical and societal impacts of AI systems.” He cautioned organisations to adopt AI governance responsibly, not doing “ethics washing” – cosmetic attempts at appearances. In his view, many organisations set up ethics offices or committees that appear stern-looking but lack the real ability to impose ethical usage of AI. “Nigerian organisations must shun this,” Olugbade warned. “AI governance must have real organisational authority the ability to guide businesses through uncertainty, be indispensable, and be central to decision-making. In that way, they will use responsible AI adoption to the fullest extent.” Similarly, the Group Executive Director, Chams Holding Company, Femi Oyenuga referred to AI as a governance “inflection point” that must be dealt with urgently through systemic regulation in order to ensure accountability and transparency. Also speaking to the audience, President and Chairman of ICSAN Council, Uto Ukpanah, said the Institute will continue to empower members with knowledge on AI governance, push national discussion on the subject, and call for revision of board charters to include AI-linked responsibilities.

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on members of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontics to embrace technology and innovation as drivers of enhancing the delivery of healthcare in the country. The governor called for the above during a visit to the 19th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting of the association in Benin City, which was themed “Embracing Technology and Innovations in Orthodontics: Pioneering the Future.” frowned On behalf of the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, Okpebholo wished the association all the best for being resolute and committed to ensuring oral health in Nigeria. Secret Service Foils Telecoms Sabotage Plot Ahead of UN Assembly in New York

The United States Secret Service reported that an extremely sophisticated electronic network of devices to disable New York’s telecommunications system before the United Nations General Assembly was disrupted. Although the agency did not name the perpetrators, it linked the devices with “nation-state actors” and individuals already under the surveillance of federal law enforcement. Investigators suspect that the plot could be traced to the Chinese government, according to a law enforcement official. “The danger posed to our country’s telecommunications by this network of devices cannot be overstated,” Secret Service Director Sean Curran said in a statement released prior to President Donald Trump addressing world leaders at the UN headquarters in New York. The agency explained that the network was uncovered after a string of anonymous phone threats against senior U.S. officials. The devices, officials warned, could disable cell towers, conduct denial-of-service attacks, and facilitate encrypted communications between criminal groups and rival foreign agents. Secret Service Special Agent Matt McCool confirmed that no arrests had been made and that investigators are still attempting to identify the perpetrators and their motives, including whether the operation specifically targeted the UN General Assembly. The probe began in the spring as part of the campaign to monitor the fraudulent calls directed to senior officials. The authorities then seized more than 300 computer servers and 100,000 SIM cards that were spread across various points within a 35-mile radius of the UN. The officials mentioned that the location and timing of the devices were of concern regarding mass disruption. “Initial analysis indicates cellular communications between nation-state threat actors and individuals who are individuals of federal law enforcement interest,” the agency disclosed. According to The New York Times, data extracted from the SIM cards revealed affiliations with the government of one foreign country and drug cartel members. The investigators also discovered 80 grams of cocaine and illegal weapons in some of the locations.

Larry Ellison Becomes World’s Richest Person After Oracle Stock Surges 40%

In a stunning turn of events, Oracle founder Larry Ellison has knocked Elon Musk off his perch as the world’s wealthiest person after his company’s stock went absolutely bonkers on Wednesday. According to Linda Ikeji Blog, Oracle shares exploded by more than 40% in early trading, hitting $340 per share and pushing the company’s value close to $958 billion. Since Ellison owns about 41% of Oracle, his net worth shot up to $393 billion—just enough to edge past Musk’s $384 billion fortune, according to Bloomberg’s wealth tracker. This wasn’t just any ordinary trading day. Oracle logged its biggest single-day gain in company history, and Ellison scored the largest one-day wealth increase ever recorded by Bloomberg. Not bad for an 81-year-old who’s been in the tech game since the 1970s. While Oracle is Ellison’s cash cow, the guy has his fingers in plenty of other pies. He owns Tesla stock, an entire Hawaiian island (Lanai), the Indian Wells tennis tournament, and even runs a professional sailing team on the side. What makes this wealth flip even more interesting is that Ellison and Musk are actually close friends. Ellison mentored Musk for years, served on Tesla’s board from 2018 to 2022, and threw $1 billion at Musk’s Twitter buyout without batting an eye. Musk regularly hangs out at Ellison’s Hawaiian hideaway, so this probably won’t hurt their friendship.

Elon Musk Vows to Appeal $243 Million Ruling Against Tesla

Elon Musk has vowed to appeal a recent court ruling that orders Tesla to pay $243 million in damages. The decision, handed down by a jury in Florida, found Tesla partly responsible for a fatal 2019 crash involving its Autopilot system. The case centered on the deaths of Naibel Benavides and her partner, Dillon Angulo, who were struck by a Tesla Model S in Key Largo while stargazing. The crash resulted in Benavides’s death and Angulo’s severe injuries. The driver, George McGee, who admitted to being distracted by his phone, had previously settled with the victims’ families. The jury’s conclusion was that Tesla shared liability, agreeing with the plaintiffs that Autopilot was not designed for the type of road where the crash occurred but was not restricted from operating there. The victims’ attorney, Brett Schreiber, accused Tesla of negligence and pointed to Musk’s public statements that claimed Autopilot was safer than human drivers. Tesla called the verdict “wrong” and a “fiction created by plaintiffs’ lawyers.” The company argued that the crash was the fault of the distracted driver and that no car at the time would have prevented the incident. Tesla also claimed the verdict could jeopardize the development of life-saving self-driving technology. Legal analysts believe the ruling could lead to a wave of new lawsuits against the company. This decision comes as Musk pushes forward with plans to expand Tesla’s autonomous driving technology and launch a driverless taxi service.

NCC Gives Telcos 90 Days to Refund Unused Airtime on Inactive Lines, Threatens Sanctions

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed telecom operators to comply within a 90-day period with the long-standing issue of unclaimed and unused subscriber recharges. The directive was issued at an announcement during a high-level virtual stakeholders’ forum on Tuesday to conclude new consumer protection regulations in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. On behalf of the NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Commissioner of the Commission for Stakeholder Management, Rimini Makama, said the decision was made so that consumers do not lose their prepaid credit due to prolonged line inactivity. “With the exponential growth in mobile subscriptions and the dominance of prepaid plans, it has become necessary to safeguard consumer interests from being eroded by forfeiture of unused credit,” Dr. Maida stated. The Commission once again reminded subscribers that they can reclaim unused airtime within 12 months if they can establish ownership of the line. According to the current Quality of Service Business Rules, prepaid lines that are not subject to any revenue-generating activity for six months are deactivated and can be recycled after a further six months. Draft guidelines were read by Mrs. Chizua Whyte, Head of Legal and Regulatory Services in the NCC, compelling telecom operators to audit all the churned numbers and guarantee that subscribers are refunded through service alternatives. She warned that commercialisation of forfeited airtime will be strictly prohibited, and that any operator that fails to comply within the 90-day timeframe following the release of the final guidance will be liable to regulatory audit and sanctions. The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent, accountable, and consumer-centric regulatory ambience in Nigeria’s telecoms industry.
