US artist Ciara has officially obtained citizenship of the Benin Republic after discovering her ancestral heritage in the West African nation.
She was granted her citizenship certificate on July 26, 2025, at a special ceremony to mark the United Nations Day for Women and Girls of African Descent.
Sharing tearful videos of the ceremony on Instagram on July 28, Ciara joyfully declared, “I am Beninoise.”
The victory is an empowering cultural and personal return home for the artist, who has throughout her career respected African heritage.
