Dr Uyi Akpata, nominee for the Sportsville Sports Personality of the Year Award, has expressed deep appreciation for the recognition, describing it as a great honour and motivation to continue his transformative work in Nigerian cricket. Speaking during a courtesy visit by the award organisers, led by Frank Ilaboya, at his office in Lekki, Akpata acknowledged the impact of the recognition.
“This award means so much to me; it motivates me to do more. I promise to keep pushing for the development of cricket in Nigeria,” he said.
Akpata, the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, has been instrumental in the sport’s rapid growth. He previously received the Sportsville Special Recognition Award and is now in contention for its highest honour.
“It’s a tremendous honour. It shows that people recognise one’s efforts. Our vision remains to make cricket as popular as possible, focusing on facilities, human capital, and empowering players and officials,” he added.
His nomination has been widely celebrated, particularly among cricket enthusiasts. Ejiro Omonode, Managing Director of Masters Sports International, praised Akpata’s impact, stating:
“This award is well deserved. Under Akpata’s leadership, Nigeria has seen unprecedented progress in cricket. His passion and administrative skill are unmatched.”
Dr Akpata and 15 other nominees will be honoured on Friday, March 21, 2025, at the prestigious Eko Club, Surulere, Lagos.
