Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the arrest of a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operative for the killing of a police officer during an operation in the Ivo Local Government Area.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed this in a statement that the unfortunate incident occurred on August 27, 2025, when police operatives were on an operation to arrest suspects involved in a petition.

The officers had also properly identified themselves before NSCDC officials and soldiers who manned the security at a quarry where suspects were working, Ukandu said. The suspects went along with the police willingly, and the soldiers let the arrest proceed.

But Ukandu added that NSCDC team leader had allegedly stopped the police vehicle and ordered his men to restrain the officers from taking the suspects away. Despite pleas by the suspects themselves, the NSCDC officer was obstinate and went on to try to seize a policeman’s firearm.

“In the commotion that ensued, the gun discharged and a police officer was shot dead and rushed to hospital but later confirmed dead,” Ukandu added.

He ensured that the NSCDC officer in question has been taken into custody, while a detailed investigation is ongoing.

Ebonyi State Command reiterated that no individual or agency can hinder the Nigeria Police Force from carrying out their legitimate constitutional duties.
