The lawmaker representing Esan West/Esan Central/Igueben Federal Constituency, Hon. Marcus Onobun, has strongly condemned the recent threats allegedly issued against him on social media by a self-acclaimed armed group. He also condemned in very strong terms the recent threats, which he said were issued against his person on social media by a self-acclaimed armed group. These, he told the House, were not only reckless and destabilising but were currently making the rounds online and claiming to be present in Ekpoma, Irrua, and surrounding communities.
Despite the tension generated by the viral threats, Onobun assured residents that there was no need to panic. He said government authorities were aware of the incidents and had since mobilized solid security measures to ward off the threats in the affected areas.
The lawmaker praised the Government of Edo State for responding quickly to the development by holding an emergency security meeting that was attended by heads of major security agencies in the state.
He added that he remains in continuous communication with federal security institutions to ensure seamless collaboration between national forces and state-led efforts, a combination he described as key to flushing out the criminal elements from Edo State.
Onobun appealed to the people of Esan West, Esan Central, Igueben, and the whole of Edo Central District to remain calm about the situation and go about their normal businesses without fear. He also asked the public to desist from sharing unverified videos or panic messages, which could threaten the security operations currently ongoing.
The lawmaker, in reaffirming his commitment to the protection of life and property, promised continued collaboration with state and federal authorities to ensure that Esan land remained safe, peaceful, and free from the activities of felons.
