Edo Governorship Tribunal Resumes as PDP Challenges APC Victory

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal resumed proceedings on Monday in Benin City, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) preparing for a legal showdown over the outcome of the September 21 gubernatorial election.

The PDP’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, is contesting the victory of APC’s Governor Monday Okpebholo, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The PDP alleges widespread electoral irregularities, including vote inflation in APC strongholds, unlawful cancellation of PDP votes, and non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

Speaking ahead of the hearing, PDP spokesperson Barrister Tony Ehilebo expressed optimism, stating, “We have overwhelming evidence to prove the election was rigged. We are confident the tribunal will restore the stolen mandate and uphold democratic integrity.”

The APC dismissed the allegations, labeling them baseless. Chief Alex Okosun, an APC chieftain, urged the PDP to move on, emphasizing, “Politicians must stop litigating every election. Asue is Senator Monday Okpebholo’s Esan brother. He should support the Governor to move Edo forward. Having an Esan governor is a significant milestone.”

The tribunal’s proceedings are expected to draw significant public attention, as both parties remain steadfast in their positions on the contentious election.
