The Edo State Government has announced major changes to its education system, including a complete ban on graduation parties for nursery and primary school children.
The new policies, set to begin in the 2025/2026 school year, aim to improve learning quality and consistency across all schools in the state, according to the Ministry of Education.
Under the new rules, graduation ceremonies will only be permitted for students finishing Basic Education (Primary 1 through JSS 3) and those completing Senior Secondary 3.
Even these celebrations must be simple, with elaborate events like prom parties now forbidden.
The government is also introducing a textbook sharing system where younger siblings can use the same approved textbooks their older siblings purchased.
Each textbook will remain valid for at least four years before being updated, helping families save money while ensuring all students use the same materials.
The most significant change requires all JSS 3 students to complete entrepreneurship training in a trade of their choice before graduating.
Students will receive both their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and a Skills Acquisition Certificate upon completion.
The Ministry explained that these reforms will help Edo students develop both strong academic foundations and practical business skills they’ll need to succeed in today’s competitive environment.
