FG Launches Maternal Mortality Reduction Initiative in Kano to Improve Healthcare Access

The Federal Government has inaugurated the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovative Initiative (Mamii) in Kano, aimed at enhancing healthcare services for pregnant women and reducing maternal deaths across Nigeria. Speaking at the implementation design workshop in Kano on Monday, Dr. Dayo Adeyoju, the Mamii lead, highlighted the program’s goal of achieving the president’s vision of preventing avoidable maternal and child deaths.

The initiative prioritizes 172 local government areas nationwide, which account for 55% of maternal deaths. States with high-burden LGAs include Kano (18), Katsina (15), Borno (11), Kaduna, and Jigawa.

Dr. Adeyoju emphasized the importance of community-specific approaches, stating, “We are conducting state-specific assessments to identify the root causes and implement tailored solutions to significantly reduce maternal mortality rates across the country.”

The program underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring improved healthcare outcomes for women and children, especially in high-risk areas.
