Former Senator Warns Youth About Costly Legal Battles from Social Media Posts

Shehu Sani

Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has advised young Nigerians to think carefully before posting on social media, warning that careless comments can lead to expensive court cases.

His warning comes after reports that Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, might sue activist-lawyer Deji Adeyanju over statements he considers defamatory.

Writing on Facebook, Sani reminded people that while freedom of expression is a constitutional right, there are legal consequences for defamation and slander.

Speaking from experience, the former senator revealed that during his time in office, the Kaduna State governor took him to court five separate times.

“My advice to young comrades on social media is not to be afraid of expressing your views, but always keep money to pay your lawyers in case you are dragged to the courts,” he wrote.

Sani pointed out that many people don’t realize how expensive legal battles can become when they insult others online.

He noted that while rights groups often promise to provide legal help, most abandon cases once they drag on for too long.

He also shared some practical wisdom with a touch of humor: “Facebook usually asks, ‘What’s on your mind?’ It’s not everything that is in your mind that you should post.”
