Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter: U.S. Mission in Nigeria Announces Temporary Closure to Honor Late Leader

In a touching tribute to former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away last month at the remarkable age of 100, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closing their doors today. The announcement came via the U.S. Mission to Nigeria’s X platform yesterday, marking a moment of remembrance for the 39th President of the United States.

Carter, who held office from 1977 to 1981, left an indelible mark on U.S.-Nigerian relations as the first American president to set foot on Nigerian soil.

“We remember former President Jimmy Carter, a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights,” the Mission stated, highlighting how his support for Nigeria’s democratic journey helped forge stronger bonds between the two nations.

Beyond his presidential legacy, Carter was widely respected as a champion of peace and human dignity. His post-presidency years were marked by prolific writing and unwavering dedication to humanitarian causes.
