A Nigerian mother has sparked massive debate on social media after a viral video revealed her passionate plea on the rising cost of education in Lagos.
In the footage, the lady, a Sangotedo resident, lamented how she had been going from school to school in search of an affordable option for her two kids but all in vain.
The tuition alone is ₦800,000. Bus is ₦365,000. Textbooks, ₦300,000,” she said, sighing aloud. “They’re charging ₦1.2 million, ₦1.3 million a child and I have two children.”.
She admitted that though she had been alerted to the financial cost of bringing up children, the experience had been much worse than she ever expected. She added that though schools and parents alike are struggling with Nigeria’s lean economic circumstances, school fees continue to go up with no end in sight.
“I’ve consulted friends, searched Google, but most of the schools simply continue to increase fees every term. Even textbooks are now over ₦300k for a school year,” she continued.
Ending the video with a call for help, she appealed to other parents along the Abijo axis of Lagos to recommend any truly affordable schools. “Please, if you know any school that’s very affordable, send me the name. I’m tired,” she begged.
The video is now viral, and a majority of Nigerians have empathized with her, sharing the same frustrations regarding the fees in private schools.
