Kaduna Residents Decry Rising Theft of Metals and Electricity Cables, Call for Action

Residents of Kaduna State have raised concerns over the rampant theft of iron materials and electricity cables, allegedly perpetrated by scrap metal scavengers in collaboration with local thieves. Victims have called for urgent intervention from security agencies to address the growing menace.

Uche Eze, a resident of Ungwan Sunday near the Sabon Tasha overhead bridge, revealed that criminals had vandalized the iron gates at the entrance of his compound during the night. He urged the Nigeria Police Force to establish a police outpost near the bridge or Halima Junction to curb criminal activities in the area.

“All manners of people operate around the Sabon Tasha bridge, and many of them are involved in stealing, including phone snatching at night,” Eze lamented.

Ishaku Barde, another resident building a house near Government Day Secondary School, Sabon Tasha, shared a similar ordeal. “I recently discovered that all my window iron burglaries and electricity cables were stolen. Security agents need to be more vigilant, especially at night,” he said.

Patrick Ter added that the rising cost of iron rods has worsened the situation, with thieves targeting signboards, building materials, and even electricity cables. “In our compound at Ungwan Sunday, they came and removed the electricity cables from the walls of our building. The situation is out of hand, and the government must act fast,” he warned.

Residents have called for increased security patrols and strict measures to curb the activities of these metal scavengers and their accomplices to prevent further loss of property.
