A Kano State High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging for the brutal killing of Buhari Imam, a lecturer at Yusuf Maitama Sule University (formerly Northwest University), during a robbery attack in 2016.
Justice Fatima Adamu, who delivered the judgment on Monday, found the two men Aliyu Hussaini from Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters and Amir Zakariyya from Unguwar Malam Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.
“The action of the defendants shows total disregard for human life,” the judge said solemnly. “I hereby sentence the defendants to five years’ imprisonment each for conspiracy, 10 years for robbery, and death by hanging for culpable homicide. May God have mercy on their souls.”
According to the prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the incident happened on June 11, 2016, when the two men conspired, armed themselves with knives and machetes, and stormed the home of the lecturer in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters.
They reportedly robbed him of his mobile phone before stabbing him several times in the stomach, thigh, and back, leading to his death.
The prosecution presented medical reports, photographs, and three witnesses to support its case. Despite the defendants denying the charges, the court ruled that the evidence was overwhelming and proved beyond reasonable doubt that they were responsible for the lecturer’s death.
The offences contravened Sections 97(1), 298(c), and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.
