The government of Katsina State has announced free treatment for all citizens diagnosed with typhoid fever, in a bid to check the spread of the disease and reduce the burden of healthcare on affected individuals.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Culture, five hospitals have been designated to carry out the free treatment: General Hospital Katsina, Turai Yar’Adua Hospital, General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital, General Hospital Jibia, and General Hospital Funtua.
Commissioner for Information and Culture, Bala Salisu Zango, stated the program is a component of the overall government master plan to improve healthcare delivery and improve public health outcomes in the state.
Reiterating the same, the Commissioner for Health, Hon. Musa Adamu Funtua, underscored early diagnosis and accessibility of care. “Our intention is to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our citizens. By providing free medical care to typhoid patients, we wish to encourage early treatment, avert complications, and ultimately curb the spread of this avoidable illness,” he stated.
Typhoid fever, which in the distant past was linked to poor sanitation, contaminated water, and dirty living conditions, remains a serious health problem in Katsina, especially during the rainy season.
The public has been requested to be careful about the initial symptoms of constant fever, abdominal pain, headaches, and general weakness. The victims are encouraged to present themselves at any of the designated hospitals for treatment immediately.
Additionally, the state government asked members of the public to embrace preventive practices like regular handwashing using clean water and proper sanitation in a bid to stop the transmission of the disease.
