Kogi Mourns 26 Victims of Niger River Boat Mishap, Pledges Safer Waterways

The Kogi State Government was plunged into unprecedented grief by Tuesday night boat mishap on River Niger that took the lives of at least 26 passengers.

Commodity traders who were on their way from Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State to Illushi Market in the neighbouring Edo State were involved in the accident.

In a statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Communications Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the government described the tragedy as a tragic loss and sent condolences to Ibaji people and the families of the victims.

Governor Usman Ododo, while condoling the victims, instructed the State Emergency Management Agency to collaborate with councils in delivering immediate support and relief. He also pledged to raise cooperation with federal agencies for the aim of enhancing waterway safety.

“The government and people of Kogi State received the news of the boat accident with utmost regret. The media reported that the sad incident has reportedly claimed the lives of not less than 26 passengers. It is a sad loss, and our thoughts and prayers are for the bereaved families and the entire Ibaji community,” the statement went on.

Governor Ododo also promised that measures would be put in place to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future. He called on riverine dwellers to prioritize safety through not overloading themselves as well as the use of life jackets and other protective gear whenever they travel by water.

The state government also reaffirmed its readiness to assist Ibaji Local Government Area people during this trying time.
