Michelle Obama to Skip Donald Trump Inauguration, Sources Say It’s a Deliberate Decision

Former First Lady Michelle Obama has decided not to attend Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration, as confirmed by her office on Tuesday. The statement did not provide specific reasons for her absence, but sources close to the Obamas have since revealed that Michelle’s choice was intentional.

“She’s never been fake and she’s never been phoney. She’s always been very deliberate about where and how she shows up,” one source explained. According to these sources, Michelle does not feel any obligation to rally behind Trump or offer support, asserting that her absence itself speaks volumes.

“She showed up reluctantly for the election. They were united, but she doesn’t have to unify around [Trump]. She doesn’t have to say anything,” the source added.

The decision comes after Michelle missed the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter. A statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama shared with The Associated Press confirmed that Michelle will also skip Trump’s inauguration on January 20, when he is set to be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. No further explanation was given for her absence.

“Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration,” the statement read.

While Michelle Obama will not be attending, her husband, former President Barack Obama, is expected to be present. Michelle’s absence follows her outspoken criticism of Trump. During the 2020 Democratic National Convention, she stated, “For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us. See, his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly successful people who happen to be black.”

Trump had promoted the “birther movement,” which cast doubt on Barack Obama’s citizenship. Although Trump eventually acknowledged that Barack Obama was born in the U.S., he never offered an apology for his actions.

Other former presidents and key political figures, including George W. Bush, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Joe and Jill Biden, are expected to attend the inauguration.
