Nigerian Lawmaker Philip Agbese Sues Binance Executive Over Defamation

Philip Agbese, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has taken legal action against Tigran Gambaryan, an executive of Binance Holdings Limited, over allegations of defamation. The lawsuit, filed at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, seeks N1.5 billion in damages.

The controversy began on Friday, February 14, when Gambaryan, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), accused three Nigerian lawmakers—Agbese, Peter Akpanke, and an unnamed third legislator—of demanding a $150 million bribe in cryptocurrency. Agbese, who serves as the deputy spokesperson of the House of Representatives, swiftly denied the claim, stating that he does not own a crypto wallet and has never engaged in cryptocurrency trading.

“I could not have asked for funds to be credited to a non-existent wallet,” he said.

He initially gave Gambaryan seven days to retract the statement and issue a public apology. However, when Gambaryan failed to comply and instead repeated his allegations, Agbese proceeded with legal action after just three days.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 17, 2025, Agbese explained his decision to sue, citing the damage to his reputation and the integrity of the Nigerian government.

“My reputation as a citizen, a distinguished congressman, and that of my country is at stake.

If I fail to take action today, posterity, my children, and future generations will not forgive me,” he stated.

Agbese also criticized Gambaryan for attempting to avoid further discussion by claiming he wanted to spend more time with his family.

“I am an African and have a larger family and more loved ones to stay with than Gambaryan.

He must come to court to prove his allegations or be ready to pay the compensation I have demanded.”

The lawmaker emphasized that his lawsuit is not just about financial compensation but also about setting a precedent.

“This is to serve as a deterrent to others who think falsehood is a strategy to get away with their crimes against our country and humanity.”
